Now I was taught that an idol is anything you spend more time with or revere more than God. This can be self-reliance, reputation, education,achievement, your children, your spouse, your boyfriend, or even a fantasy of romance. Whatever it is hold nothing more valuable and reverent than God. He is the only one worthy of worship. Jason Upton sang it best
